2016 Honda 150cc Commuter

Honda will introduce a new 150cc commuter motorcycle which will sit below the CB Unicorn and the newly launched Hornet 160. The patent image shows that it is a naked bike.

2016 Honda 150cc Commuter

Honda launched 15 new products in 2015 across a host of segments

Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India (HMSI) is developing a new 150cc commuter motorcycle which will be positioned below the CB Unicorn 160 and CB Hornet 160R models. The motorcycle has been patented by the Japanese manufacturer and we have got our hands on the patent image. The new offering is aimed at getting back the customers lost due to the discontinuation of the old Unicorn as the new one has not matched their expectations.

The patented image shows that the upcoming 150cc commuter vehicle is designed according to Honda’s new design language. The naked motorcycle closely resembles the defunct CB Twister as well. The front end looks inspired from the Twister while the rear is identical to the new Shine SP. The alloy wheels come from the newly launched Hornet. The fuel tank along with some other parts looks similar to the new Unicorn. The prime competitor will be the Bajaj Discover and the upcoming cruiser-commuter offering currently under development.

The new 150cc commuter from Honda will get a cost effective pricing with component sharing evident on the model. You can make out the twin rear shocks instead of the more sophisticated monoshock unit. This will also mark Honda’s re-entry into the entry-level 150cc segment which does not have much competition. The bike is also likely to use the same 160cc engine but in a detuned state for higher fuel efficiency.

Honda was aggressive in 2015 with 15 new launches of which the last one was the CB Hornet 160R. The Japanese manufacturer has teased a new brand ‘Navi’ which will debut at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. The 150cc segment was positive for Honda only with the Unicorn for the longest time, even though the Dazzler and Trigger did not make the cut. Nonetheless, the Hornet 160 has received a good start. So, an entry-level 150cc commuter from Honda will be interesting to see.

The new 150cc commuter will be placed below new Unicorn and Hornet 160

Update – The bike which has been patented is the Honda Verza which is sold in other Asian markets. The motorcycle is powered by a 149.2cc engine that produces 13.03 HP of power.

Honda CB125F Launch Being Considered For India

2015 Honda CB125F Front

Honda is planning to display the CB125F at the 2016 Auto Expo to gauge customer response and accordingly take a call on launching the motorcycle in India.

2015 Honda CB125F Unveil

The Honda CB125F is a smart looking bike

The Indian motorcycle market has been full of action since some time. New bikes are being launched by almost all manufacturers in different segments in order to capture a larger share of the market. Currently, it is Honda which leads in the 125cc bike segment with the CB Shine which was recently updated with a 5-speed gearbox and cosmetic changes. Now, the company is looking at bringing in another motorbike in this segment.

After the discontinuation of the CB Stunner, the premium 125cc space hasn’t seen a contender from Honda. It might change soon as the Japanese bikemaker will display the CB125F at the Auto Expo next month to gauge the public’s response. If the feedback is satisfactory, it will launch the motorcycle here in the near future. It is likely to share mechanical components like the engine and gearbox with the CB Shine to keep costs low.

Internationally, the Honda CB125F comes with a fuel-injected 125cc engine producing 10 PS of power and 10.2 Nm of torque. In India, it will get a carburettor equipped 125cc motor, producing 10.6 PS of power and 10.3 Nm of torque. In terms of looks, the 125cc bike resembles the recently launched Livo from certain angles. The funky looking alloys and the chiseled fuel tank add some flair to it. The instrument console is a dual pod unit with the usual tell-tale signs and a tachometer in addition to the speedometer.

Expected to be priced at around Rs. 65,000/- if launched here, the Honda CB125F will be one of the expensive 125cc bikes on sale. Honda needs to be more aggressive in the Indian market and instead of launching refreshed version of bikes with new colours and stickers, it will have to launch new products to capture the market. At the Auto Expo, Honda is expected to launch the CBR300R too which has been long due.

Honda will be displaying a slew of products at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. The company will also raise awareness about road safety and Chhota Bheem will also be present.

Honda EV-Cub Concept

Honda will showcase 6 production ready products and 4 concepts

The two-wheeler division of Honda will be displaying as many as 10 products at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. The company seems to be betting big on the Indian market and these products are going to draw a lot of buzz towards Honda. The most exciting product is going to be the Navi for sure. Honda has been giving out teasers of this two-wheeler since a long time but we don’t know whether it is a scooter or bike or an all-new concept. Honda claims that the Navi will create a new segment in the Indian two-wheeler market.

Honda will also announce an adventure bike (Africa mostly) and it will also be a part of the company’s ‘Make In India’ resolve. The Japanese company is also going to showcase four updated models from its current portfolio in India. These facelifted products will make sure the company’s line-up remains fresh. Apart from these 6 production ready two-wheelers (CBR300R likely), Honda is going to put on display four concepts too.

Out of the 4 concepts, 2 were already revealed earlier and they are the NEOWING and EV-Club concepts. The NEOWING is a 3-wheeler sports hybrid while the EV-Club is a light scooter. These concepts were earlier showcased at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Apart from these, two more concepts will be unveiled at the Auto Expo but Honda hasn’t revealed anything about them and they have been kept under wraps.

Racing fans can rejoice now. Honda will be showcasing Marc Marquez’s MotoGP bike RC213V. The company will also have a Road Safety Zone where instructors will teach lessons on road safety to all age groups. The company’s brand ambassadors, Akshay Kumar and Tapsee Pannu will also grace the Honda pavilion. Chhota Bheem, a very famous cartoon character, will also be present at Honda’s stall, talking about road safety.

Honda Navi Is A Scooter-Bike Crossover, Unveil At Auto Expo

The upcoming Honda Navi is a scooter-bike crossover which aims at creating a new segment in the 2-wheeler market. It will be unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo.

Honda Navi Teaser

Honda started marketing the Navi from the beginning of January

The scooter market in India has been single handedly dominated by Honda since many years. Ever since it launched the Activa, the market lapped it up and till date the scooter gets tremendous response. But, if we look at the motorcycle market, Honda’s total sales aren’t even close to the competitors. Having tried its hand many times at increasing its market share there, it has figured out that it isn’t working well. So, they have a different strategy now.

Scooter owners have often loved scooters for their practicality but loathe them for their lack of comfort and flick-ability when compared to bikes. Honda is trying to bridge this gap by introducing a scooter-bike crossover. The project is codenamed K74 and the name for the masses is Navi. The Japanese automaker teased the name a few weeks ago and spoke about the new vehicle’s unveil at the 2016 Auto Expo. Whether it will be unveiled in concept form or in a production-ready guise remains to be seen.

The Honda Navi is said to be different from the step-through scooters which are common in Southeast Asian markets. It will share its 110c engine and other mechanicals with the Activa and will be produced at the company’s plant in Manesar. The major driver for its success will be the way it looks as Indians are very conscious about their vehicle’s aesthetics. If it looks good and offers something additional over the current crop of scooters, this may be another game changer for the Japanese brand.

At the 2016 Auto Expo, Honda will have ten models on display out of which six will be the ones to be launched in India and four will be in concept form. The highlight of the pavilion is supposed to be the Navi considering its marketing started at the beginning of this month itself. The production of the new model is rumoured to be capped at one lakh units per annum but if it is accepted well by the market, the production will be ramped up.

Honda EV-Cub Concept 2

Honda has bought the EV-Cub Concept to the Auto Expo 2016. It is an interesting last mile connectivity solution aimed at reducing air pollution.

Honda EV-Cub Concept 1

Many automotive brands have realized the potential of electric vehicles and have already started working on them. Raising awareness for the same would take some time but once that happens, sales are bound to increase a lot. Honda is also trying to be prepared for the surge in demand. It has developed the EV-Cub Concept in order to ease short distance commute and to fill in the shoes of the old Super Cub scooter.

The design of the EV-Cub is very retro and simple. It gets a single seat and a space behind it for luggage. There’s space between the rider’s feet too for luggage. The main purpose of the two-wheeler is to makes short distance commute more economical. Being an easy vehicle to ride, it can be used by multiple people in a family. Considering it’s powered by an electric motor, running costs will be very low.

The EV-Cub has been designed keeping multiple things in mind. The battery sits at the centre of the scooter and at the lowest possible position in order to have proper weight distribution and ease handling. The battery can be charged from any household socket via the cable tucked away along with the battery. If launched in India once production begins, it has the potential of being an overnight success considering majority of the population uses two-wheelers for short commute only.

Honda has showcased the CRF1000L Africa Twin at the 2016 Auto Expo. The adventure-touring bike will be launched by the end of 2016.

Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin

The Africa Twin stands very tall and looks intimidating

Honda had set a standard for adventure bikes with the Africa Twin series in the 90s. These bikes had off-roading capabilities we find in adventure bikes today. However, they were discontinued in 2003. The Africa Twin series was relaunched after twelve years in 2015 with the introduction of the CRF1000L. The Japanese manufacturer has showcased the new Africa Twin at the 2016 Auto Expo with the commercial launch being expected by the end of 2016. It will be assembled in India to keep the price competitive.

The Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin is a proper adventure-touring bike with all the off-roading capabilities the original Africa Twin was known for in the 90s. The faired front fascia along with the golden front forks gives the bike very good character. The adventure motorcycle comes with Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) and a switchable ABS for the rear wheel. It will stand against the Triumph Tiger series, Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and Kawasaki Versys 1000 in India.

The Honda CRF1000L is powered by a 998cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine with the crank rotated to 270 degrees which produces 94 BHP of power at 7500 RPM and 98 Nm of torque at 6000 RPM and the engine is either mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT (Dual-Clutch) gearbox with on and off-road riding modes. The braking crew consists of 320 mm 4-piston floating dual-disc on the front wheel while the rear wheel has a 256 mm 2-piston floating disc. The suspension set up has telescopic forks upfront while the rear is a monoshock unit.

Honda has displayed the Neowing concept at the 2016 Auto Expo. The tilting trike was unveiled last year at the Tokyo Motor Show.

2016 Honda Neowing Front

The Honda Neowing attracts a lot of eye balls at the Auto Expo

A pioneer in 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler segment, Honda has been missing from the 3-wheeler segment. But that is supposed to change. The Japanese automaker unveiled the Neowing concept at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. It is a trike which will tilt like a large motorcycle and provide excellent cornering feel, something other trikes in the market currently don’t offer. The concept does look uber cool and is promising.

Powered by a hybrid powertrain combining a 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, the Neowing will be no slouch when it comes to performance. It gets two wheels at the front and one rather wide wheel at the rear. The purpose of this trike is to give good low-speed stability making it easy to ride around in thick traffic while offering good leaning ability too when the rider wants to get an involving riding feel.

The design of the Honda Neowing concept is very futuristic and grabs a lot of attention. If and when it is launched, it will be a very practical option for someone who wants a high power motorcycle but is not sure of handling the high weight. The trike’s third wheel will help manage the weight easily while offering almost similar thrills. The segment sales are on the rise globally and Honda should aim at converting this concept into a production ready model soon.

The Indian motorcycle market is largely dominated by commuter bikes which primarily serve the purpose of carrying its owner from point A to B reliably and sip very less fuel while doing it. Thus it is of no surprise that every automaker wants a presence in this segment. Honda is one manufacturer which has a wide array of motorcycles for every kind of customer in its portfolio world over such as the TMX 125 Alpha motorcycle which it just imported from Philippines to India.

Import data has shown that three Honda TMX 125 Alpha motorcycles were imported in March by the automaker. The data also stated that the bikes have been imported for research and development purposes which indicates that Honda might target the rural market with a sturdy and no-frills low cost motorcycle. All the three motorcycles have a declared value of Rs. 1,18,390/- each, which is the importer declared value and not the real market price.

The Honda TMX 125 Alpha is a sturdy and affordable motorcycle with features and styling aimed squarely at the rural customer. The motorcycle retails for PHP 49,900 which converts to Rs. 70,000/-. If launched, the Honda TMX 125 could be positioned slightly above the Dream Yuga and Dream Neo and below the CB Shine judging by its engine capacity and exterior styling. Honda has been busy with its 2016 motorsport season, as it has made quite a few changes which can be seen in the company’s press release for the latest season. The Honda One Make race will commence on the 24th of June at the Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore. The series has achieved a great deal in promoting motorsports in India. Carrying on this tradition, Honda has also launched a new motorsports helpline number 0124-6712863, for all the youngsters dreaming about a career in motorsports. The helpline will allow any rider to reach out to the Honda racing team, out of which the deserving candidates will be given training at Honda’s Ten10 Racing academy.

Honda Activa 125 Long Term

Honda has doubled the production capacity of its scooter plant in Gujarat by adding a second assembly line at the plant. The Honda scooter-only plant in the country has now reached at the capacity of 1.2 million units annually.

Honda Navi Video Review

The Honda Navi has been a successful product for the company

Honda is the magical name in India which is as similar to reliable and frugal scooters as Maggie is to instant noodles. But being the number one noodle maker in the country is a completely different affair from being the number one scooter maker in India. Thus to cope up with the ever increasing demand for its two-wheelers, Honda has decided to effectively double its production capacity at its scooter-only plant in Gujarat and Karnataka, thereby increasing the production of the developed in India Navi.

Honda has added an additional 6 lakhs units, bringing the total capacity of the factory to a whopping 1.6 million units annually to its plant situated at Vithalapur near Ahmedabad. This boost in production numbers brings the total output at Honda’s factories at 5.8 million units. Honda also recently announced its plans for a new line at its Narsapura facility at Karnataka. Currently, capacity at this plant is around 1.8 million units, which will be increased to 2.4 million units and thus effectively double its new two-wheeler Navi’s production capacity.

The company says that the second assembly line inaugurated recently is an exclusive scooter assembly line and will produce its largest selling two-wheeler Activa. Honda has a firm hold of the scooter segment in India with 58% market share. This segment is a gift which keeps on giving as the scooter segment is growing at 30 percent compared to 15 percent growth of the two-wheeler industry.

The state of Gujarat is also more than happy to welcome further investment into the region. Honda and its 23 vendors have together invested close to Rs. 2200 crores and generated nearly 9000 new employment opportunities in the state. Honda also claims that its CSR contribution in the region has reached close to Rs. 70 million already.

Honda ADV Scooter Teased, Unveil On 30th August [Video]

Honda City Adventure Scooter

A new teaser has just surfaced on YouTube for a Honda ADV scooter. The teaser, while obviously not revealing the complete design, gives us glimpses of the rear tail setup and the general touring ethos of the scooter.

2017 Honda City Adventure

The teaser seems to be for Honda’s City Adventure scooter

What’s being called as the City Adventure by many, has been teased in a video released by Honda. The teaser opens with the words ‘Your horizons are going to change forever’ which immediately encapsulates the adventure touring ethos of the teased machine. By the looks of it, the two-wheeler seems to be the ADV scooter that the company has been working on for a while now.

We can make out from the teaser, that the seating position will be upright. The growling exhaust note seems to be coming from a twin-cylinder motor. The scooter anyways borrows many parts from the Honda NC750X, which features a 745cc parallel-twin engine. The ADV scooter will also share the same chassis as the NC750X and Integra. The upside-down forks up front, are unique to the ADV however. The bike also seems to get spoke wheels rather than alloys for better off-road capabilities. ABS will be available as standard for the European market.

While the price is expected to be quite steep, the scooter should make for a good all round solution for the enthusiast who also has to commute. However, the seemingly low ground clearance, and the seating setup might make it difficult for some serious off-roading. Hopes for an Indian launch should be dismissed right away, as the chances for such a scooter being launched in our market are next to none. So Honda, if you’re listening, give us the CBR250RR instead.

Honda Livo Test Ride Review

Sales of the Honda Livo has just passed that of the Dream series, proving that the CD 110, Neo and Yuga haven’t really worked well for the Japanese company.

2015 Honda Livo Review

The Honda Livo outsold the three Dream series bikes

The 100-110cc market has been a strong point for Hero ever since it came to the market. But that did not stop their partner Honda to gain the sovereignty in the segment. Honda did it with its Dream series motorcycles, the Dream Yuga, Dream Neo and the low cost CD 110 Dream. It’s only been some time Honda launched its new motorcycle Livo and it helped the CBR maker to achieve success.

Honda managed to sell more than 2.5 lakh units of the Livo, more than 20,000 units per month which has led the premium commuter motorcycle to become the best seller in the segment. The competitors for the Honda Livo are the Hero Splendor iSmart 110, Yamaha Saluto RX and TVS Victor 110.

The Honda Livo is powered by a 110cc air-cooled motor which generates 8.2 BHP of maximum power at 7500 RPM and 8.63 Nm of torque at 5500 RPM. The price for the drum brake version is Rs. 53,501/- while the front disc variant of the Honda Livo is priced at Rs. 56,004/- (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Nonetheless, Honda has started a new scheme for students named ‘Student Reward Programme’ on the CB Hornet 160R. They can get 50 times the cashback of the highest percentage of marks scored in any subject.

Honda says it will push hard for scooter sales in the rural market this festive season. This decision from the Japanese company comes in the wake of increased production capacity and a good monsoon.

Honda Activa 125 Long Term

Honda Two Wheelers have been growing at a steady pace

Honda 2-Wheelers is currently the king of the hill with its scooter sales graph reaching higher heights than the Burj-Khalifa month after month. Now thinking like a leader, Honda is not stopping at its laurels and is busy pushing in-roads in the highly coveted rural markets. With its newly increased production capacity and an almighty good monsoon, Honda is all set to make hay while the sun is shining bright.

Honda Two Wheelers India is kicking-in a new strategy to push rural sales ahead of the festival season. The company is increasing production to better capture the rural markets, where demand is expected to rise, thanks to a good monsoon. The company mentions that it will make sure that Honda scooters are available off-the-shelf this festival season in rural areas and raise the portion of rural sales from 28 percent to higher levels.

Honda says that their newly established “scooter-only” factory in Sanand, Gujarat has now hit peak capacity and as a result, the piling up of back orders have come down. Honda has been busy ramping up its sales outlet numbers and have increased its reach with an additional 2000 outlets in the last 3 years. The auto-major claims that it has been growing at a 22 percent rate in the April-August period as against the industry growth of 12 percent.

Currently 66 percent of the company’s total sales came from scooters and it hopes to take that to 70 percent. Honda commands 59 percent market-share in scooters, with Activa ruling the roost. The 7th Pay Commission, One-Rank One-Pension and a good monsoon is sure to contribute to the rise of the market further.

Honda Motorcycle has showcased its self-riding bike at the 2017 CES. The concept bike shows off Honda’s robotics technology and does so by self-balancing technology which greatly reduces the possibility of falling over while the motorcycle is at rest. The concept incorporates technology that was originally developed for the Honda’s UNI-CUB personal mobility device.

The components are more compact and lightweight than the typical gyroscopes used by many personal mobility device manufacturers like Segway and Ninebot. The new Riding Assist tech has numerous applications, from forming a foundation for autonomous motorcycles to helping disabled riders that want to get back on the saddle.

In a global debut at CES 2017, Honda unveiled its Riding Assist technology, which includes the original UNI-CUB, its new NeuV autonomous ride-sharing vehicle and Safe Swarm inter-vehicle connectivity system. These technologies form Honda’s new Cooperation Mobility EcoSystem.

The President & CEO of Honda Mr. Yoshiyuki Matsumoto said “Since our founding,Honda has focused on creating technologies that help people.” He also stated that their goal is to showcase a future technology path that redefines future mobility experience. The self balancing bike is still in concept stage, but can be seen in the near future on a commercial motorcycle which can change the future of riding a bike.

The basic way in which it works is that it uses compact electric motors, disconnecting the handlebars and coordinating their movement to its operation at speeds under 5 km/hr. It also has an electric motor in the front wheel hub that allows it to move by itself, so you could feasibly whistle for it to come pick you up like a horse in an old cowboy flick, or just fool your friends with its ghost riding moves.

– The Self Balancing Bike will be a boon for short and old riders

Honda Developing Middle-Weight Bike To Take On Royal Enfield

Honda is developing a middle-weight bike for the Indian market which will take on Royal Enfield.

2017 Honda Rebel Unveiled
The Honda Rebel seems like an ideal fit for the Indian market

Royal Enfield is one of the most successful two-wheeler brands in India and when you are successful, fresh competition entering to challenge your dominance is a given. First it was Bajaj Auto with the Dominar 400 and now Honda has its eyes set on Royal Enfield. The Japanese automaker wants a chunk of RE’s Classic pie and is developing a middle-weight motorcycle for India to compete with the British brand.

Honda has formed a team of engineers from Japan and Thailand who will work in India to develop a global middle-weight bike. The Honda cruiser will be exported to Japan although the 250-400cc segment is shrinking there and Honda finds it very difficult to have a competitive model in that displacement. With design, development and production to happen in India, Honda will be able to tackle costs.

The middle-weight motorcycle segment consists of bikes with displacement of 250cc to 750cc, priced between $3000 to $7000 (Rs. 1.97 – 4.58 lakhs). Honda believes it has the technology to compete with Royal Enfield and although it wasn’t looking to compete with the Bullet maker, looking at their growth, the CBR maker is now planning to enter the segment as the business model of Eicher Motors (the parent company of RE) is very interesting.

So finally after a long lull of Honda not showing any focus on the performance and premium segments in India, the firm has turned some focus on the middle-weight category where it already has the CBR650F, sold in India and currently on a massive discount for stock clearance before BS4 emission norms kick in next month. Honda has the expertise, it also has the Rebel cruiser globally but we feel the company will make a close alternative to RE’s Classic 350, which will feature a single-cylinder engine and retro styling.

Honda Middle-Weight Bike

– Honda finds RE’s business very interesting and plans to enter the segment
– The company has allotted resources to develop a middle-weight bike in India
– Honda kick started the quarter-litre segment in India by locally manufacturing the CBR250R
– The Japanese automaker has what it takes to give RE a run for its money
