Honda’s top executives confirm that their Royal Enfield rival’s launch plans are put on hold.

Thunderbird 500 vs Mahindra Mojo vs Honda CBR250R vs Himalayan
Currently the Honda CBR250R competes against the RE Thunderbird 500

Honda has confirmed it will be launching the Africa Twin next month and three other completely new models in the current financial year (two of these will be scooters). Honda also said it will be developing a middle-weight motorcycle, that will rival Royal Enfield. But it seems that Honda has put this plan on hold.

When asked Honda as to why this plan was put on hold, the company said it doesn’t have the cost-competitiveness in developing motorcycles above the 250cc segment. Also it lacks the experience of developing motorcycles above 250cc and upto 450cc. Honda sure is taking its time to bring out its RE rival and we hope it goes into production soon.

Honda meanwhile has other targets set out for this year. It targets to sell 6 million scooters and motorcycles and plans to invest Rs. 1600 crores to launch new products and enhance capacity at its plants. Honda is building its fourth factory in Karnataka which will commence production this July, taking its annual production capacity to 6.4 million units.

India is the largest market for Honda 2-wheelers and the company is aiming for a 20% growth this year.

Hero Splendor vs Honda Activa
HMSI claims first and second spots in scooter and motorcycle segments respectively

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has been all over the news for obvious reasons. The Japanese maker has inched closer to home grown Hero MotoCorp intensifying the volume war to become the country’s largest 2-wheeler manufacturer. With 5.79 lakh units sold in April, Honda fell short of Hero by a mere 12,500 units.

Honda has set a target growth rate of 20% for this year, and if they achieve that, they’ll reach their aim of taking the number 1 spot. Last year the company posted a healthy growth of 12% against the industry’s 5%. Honda started this financial year with flying colours as it recorded a whopping 34% increase in April sales (compared to 2016).

By July, another assembly line (6 lakh units capacity) would be operational at Honda’s Karnataka plant, accounting to a total annual capacity of 6.4 million units. The new assembly line is set up to incorporate four new vehicles of which two are scooters and two are motorcycles. Honda also plans to strengthen its premium segment with the launch of Twin Africa.

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India held 28 percent share of the total global volumes of its parent company.

The Activa is the top seller for Honda India

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) is now the top contributor to its parent Honda Motor Company (HMC), not just on the sales front, but also in production. HMSI held a 28 percent share of the total global volumes of Honda Motor Company’s 2-wheeler business in FY17 as opposed to 26 percent in FY16.

Honda India expects this 28 percent to go up to 30 percent this fiscal and when it comes to total units, HMSI is the largest contributor to its parent Honda Motor Company’s 2-wheeler business. HMSI has been a profitable affair so far to Honda Motor Company and all the reinvestments and capacity expansions happening are from HMSI’s own money and it is neither a debt nor money being borrowed from Honda Motor Company, Japan.

HMSI has planned an additional Rs. 1600 crores investment this fiscal primarily for new models and a capacity expansion at its Karnataka plant. Honda has invested a total of Rs. 9500 crores including this Rs. 1600 crores, says a top executive from Honda. Honda India will be launching four new products this year, one being the Africa Twin. Honda has also confirmed that two of them will be motorcycles and the rest two will be scooters.

Honda has a target of achieving a total of 6 million units (both bikes and scooters) for FY 17-18. Honda’s forte has been the scooters segment and forecasts a 66 percent contribution from scooters and 34 percent from motorcycles. The past two fiscals too saw a similar mix of scooters and motorcycles.

Honda India is now looking at consolidating its motorcycle lineup. Honda currently holds a 14 percent market share in motorcycles and is the second largest motorcycle maker, behind its erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp and ahead of Bajaj.

Honda Global 2-Wheeler Sales

– HMSI held a 28 percent share of global volumes of HMC’s 2-wheeler business in FY17

Honda BS4 Power Drop Is Due To AHO On Unicorns & Hornet

Honda BS4 power drop reason revealed, the company cites AHO for Unicorns, Hornet losing power.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Long Term Reliability
The Honda CB Hornet 160R was a BS4 compliant motorcycle since launch

The 2017 CB Hornet 160R’s power output had been reduced from 15.67 HP to 15.04 HP. When asked Honda why, the company initially wasn’t available for comments. Honda, now has revealed the reason for them to drop the power in the CB Hornet 160R and Unicorns (the reason for the Unicorns was the upgrade from BS3 to BS4).

The CB Hornet 160R was already a BS4 compliant motorcycle since its launch. What’s more interesting is during the BS3 stock clearance time, Honda had offered massive discounts even on the BS4 compliant CB Hornet 160R. Why would Honda offer discounts on the already BS4 complaint CB Hornet 160R?

Honda told the CB Hornet 160R wasn’t featuring AHO (Auto Headlamp On) then and hence they had to clear off stock for the Hornet 160R. Supreme Court, in fact, had announced a ban on the sale and registration of BS3 vehicles effective 1st April 2017 and had nowhere mentioned about AHO in the ban. However, Honda could have assumed that pre-manufactured non-AHO motorcycles could also not be sold.

Honda also cited the same reason even for the power drop in the 2017 Hornet 160R. Honda said since the headlamp will be on all the time, it is bound to draw more power from the engine. Hence the power drop in the Hornet 160R. Honda also has dropped the power output on the Unicorn 150 and 160.

Honda BS4 Power Drop

– Honda has reduced the power output on its BS4 bikes
– Power was reduced from 15.67 HP to 15.04 HP on the Hornet
– Honda cites AHO as the reason for the drop in power output of its BS4 bikes

Recently Patented Honda Bike Isn’t Unicorn 150, Likely A 100cc

Recently patented Honda bike isn’t the Unicorn 150, is likely a new 100cc offering from Honda.

2017 Honda 100cc bike Headlamp Cowl Patented
Honda has patented the headlamp cowl of the 100cc motorcycle

Honda has recently patented a motorcycle and there have been wide speculations that it could be the facelifted Unicorn 150. Looking at the patented bike’s images, it doesn’t look quite like the facelifted Unicorn 150 due to various reasons. The patented motorcycle looks similar to the Honda CB150F sold in Pakistan while the tank is quite similar to the CB Twister.

First of all, the motorcycle does not sport a rear monoshock suspension and Honda in no dreams would think of a facelifted Unicorn 150 without a rear monoshock as it offered a rear monoshock 12 years back on the Unicorn 150. Second the design, Honda has kept the styling of the bike unaltered since its launch, and Honda would not think of altering its appearance since it’s already been so well accepted by Indian customers.

Third, the patented motorbike also does not feature a front disc brake and it is simply impossible to imagine an updated Unicorn 150 without a front disc. With the CB Shine doing well in the 125cc segment and Honda not getting volumes from the Dream series offerings, this is all likely to be a 100cc motorcycle.

Honda Royal Enfield Rival Launch By 2020, Won’t Be Rebel

Honda plans to challenge Royal Enfield by developing a new product. The competitor is expected to come up in three years.

2017 Honda Rebel Unveiled
Honda has gone back and forth about rivaling Royal Enfield

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is immensely popular in India for its Activa range of scooters. Despite having many commuter and performance motorcycles in its portfolio in India, the Activa outsells all of its motorcycles. In fact, sales of the Activa amount to more than half of the company’s sales in India. Being a Japanese brand, Honda products offer good reliability and refinement.

The company currently has Activa, Dio and other scooters in India while Shine and CBR range is very popular among motorcycles although sales of the latter have been paused. Now, Honda is planning to come up with a Royal Enfield competitor a few years down the line.

While Honda is the number one brand in the country when it comes to gearless two-wheelers, it is Royal Enfield which holds the top spot in motorcycles. Surprisingly, even during industry slowdown, Royal Enfield showed increasing growth month after month. Royal Enfield primarily specialises in retro motorcycles and its Bullet, Electra and Classic range account for a majority of sales.

Royal Enfield motorcycles have enjoyed an unchallenged run despite the launch of various modern alternatives. Bikes from Royal Enfield are available in the market from Rs. 1.14 lakhs to Rs. 2.07 lakhs. To compete with Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto launched its Dominar 400 recently in the same price range. It focusses on plus points of a cruiser in spite of being a modern package. Brands like UM and Triumph are trying hard to wade into Royal Enfield territory but without success. Royal Enfield is amongst the most profitable motorcycle brands because of its brand heritage and appeal.

Honda has not finalised the product type for the new motorcycle yet. Since Honda does not have a direct competitor to Royal Enfield bike, it is planning to develop a new one by 2020. In the US, Honda sells the Rebel cruiser which comes with two engine options but won’t bring it here. To compete with Royal Enfield motorcycles, Honda plans to develop something on the lines of the Ducati Scrambler. Honda is fully aware of the popularity of this segment and developing a dedicated product would certainly be fruitful for the brand.

– Honda plans to compete with Royal Enfield by launching a new product

– Development phase to be completed by 2020
– Honda is the top player in the scooter segment while Royal Enfield rules the 200-500cc segment

Honda cruiser bike for India to be 100 percent localised and will be a 300cc-400cc motorcycle.

2017 Honda Rebel Front

Honda is planning to launch a completely new cruiser bike for India that will take on the likes of Royal Enfield. The new bike will be made in India and will be different from Honda’s global products in this segment.

Honda has strongly considered to launch a bike in this segment and is yet to commence working on this new bike as it includes creating a concept, selecting the engine capacity and the engine type. Honda has stated that this new bike will be 100 percent made in India and will take at least 2-3 years to develop this motorcycle.

Premium motorcycles are where the growth is, with almost every 2-wheeler manufacturer planning to launch a bike in this segment and intending to a grab a share of the pie. While Benelli, Husqvarna and Honda are planning to launch a motorcycle in this segment, BMW Motorrad and TVS Motor will be launching their bikes in this segment shortly.

This new bike is expected to be in the 300cc-400cc segment and will take on Royal Enfield which is the market leader in this segment selling an average of 57,000 bikes a month. Honda intends to be the number 1 in the Indian 2-wheeler market by 2020 with automatic scooters largely leading the volumes for the automaker. Honda’s next target is to enhance its motorcycle sales in the rural markets.

Honda unveils the CRF150 concept at the 2017 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.

Honda CRF150 Unveiled At 2017 GIIAS
The front suspension on the Honda CRF150 is finished in gold

Honda has unveiled the CRF150 concept adventure motorcycle at the 2017 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. The concept motorcycle wears Russian Motocross Champion – Evgeny Bobryshev’s trademark ‘777’ livery, however, expect the production version to come in a rather different colour scheme.

The CRF150 concept gets a 149.2cc, 2-valve, single-cylinder, air-cooled, fuel-injected engine with a bore x stroke ratio of 57.3 x 57.8 mm. The power and torque figures are unknown yet, however, a 5-speed gearbox does the duty of sending power to the rear wheel. The CRF150 seen here probably uses a semi-double-cradle chassis. The frame joints near the foot peg seem to be made out of carbon fibre to save weight and for excellent rigidity.

The motorcycle gets Showa long travel inverted forks (golden finished) upfront and a monoshock at the rear. There are petal discs at both front and rear that do the braking duties. Being an adventure-biased motorcycle, the CRF150 uses 21-inch and 18-inch spoked wheels at the front and rear respectively. These wheels come wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion tyres.

Expect the production version of the CRF150 to be downsized in terms of equipment with traditional parts being used instead of the exotic ones seen on this prototype.

The upcoming Honda Scoopy has been spotted testing in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

Honda Scoopy Side Profile
The Honda Scoopy is one funky looking scooter

The Honda Scoopy has been spotted testing for the first time in India. The scooter has been spotted testing somewhere in the vicinity of Shimla.

The spotted scooter features a retro design styling with a sleek rear-end. The big round headlight with integrated turn indicators and the rounded rearview mirrors in the front fascia add to the retro charm of the scooter. The Scoopy also features alloy wheels with a disc brake for the front wheel and a regular drum brake for the rear wheel. Honda might offer the front disc brake as an option to keep a check on costs.

Powering the Honda Scoopy is the same 110cc air-cooled engine that does duty in the other 110cc Honda scooters. This motor coupled with Honda Eco Technology develops 8 HP of power and 9 Nm of torque and comes mated to a CVT gearbox.

The Honda Scoopy is expected to be launched in the Indian market by early 2018 and will primarily rival the retro scooters like Yamaha Fascino and Suzuki Access 125. In fact, Honda had announced that two new scooters would be launched in the current financial year and if reports are to be believed, the Scoopy will be one of those two scooters.

Honda Grom, Scoopy India Launch Unlikely

$

Honda Grom and Scoopy recently spotted testing on Indian roads might not be launched here.

2014 Honda Grom
The Grom was the inspiration for Honda to launch the Navi in the Indian market

The India launch of the Honda Grom and Scoopy may not be happening, as a senior official from Honda said “just testing a product on Indian roads doesn’t always mean it’s going to be launched.” This was told with reference to a question about the Grom and Scoopy being spotted on Indian roads.

Honda had announced that two new motorcycles and scooters would be launched this financial year. With the Africa Twin and Cliq already being launched, a motorcycle and a scooter are yet to see the light of the day.

But we think the Scoopy could still be launched in India. There are other 125cc scooters in the Indian market with a retro appeal. So if Honda launched the Scoopy here, it would actually make sense, unlike the Honda Grom. Even if not for the Scoopy, Honda says a similar kind of model would be launched.

The Honda Grom is a 125cc mini motorcycle which would have no direct rivals if launched here. Honda maintains that it is being tested for something else, possibly the suspension and platform to be used as a platform for an all-new product specific to India.

The Benelli TNT 135, a similarly styled mini bike too was ruled out for the Indian market. There are reports that Honda is also working on a full faired CB Hornet 160R, this could also be that motorcycle that is due for a launch. While some reports state that the CBR maker is readying a 125cc bike to extend its leadership in the 125cc motorcycle segment. However, nothing is certain as of yet.

Honda electric scooters under works, company yet to decide the launch timeline.

2018 Honda PCX Electric Scooter 1
Honda had showcased the PCX Electric at the Auto Expo earlier this year to gauge the response of Indian customers

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has commenced work on developing electric scooters for the Indian market. The move comes at a time when there is an increased concentration on the green technologies primarily to curb pollution across the major metros.

Honda’s higher executive confirms that the work regarding the electric scooters is being carried out at the company’s headquarters in Japan with inputs being taken from the Indian operations. While the automaker has a global experience in electric 2-wheelers, somehow, it feels it is quite a struggle to meet the expectations of Indian customers, especially when considering mass-market products.

Major challenges include deciding on the price, riding range and of course, the performance of the EV. The company is aiming at a range of 100 kms on a single charge and is yet to decide on the launch timeline of the electric scooters. The Japanese auto giant recently confirmed one new 2-wheeler launch and 18 upgrades for its existing products this FY.

Honda India Not Ready For Mid-Size Motorcycles

Honda mid-size motorcycles still far away, company is waiting for the right time.

2017 Honda Rebel Unveiled
Latest reports suggest that Honda is developing a new cruiser bike for India to take on the likes of Royal Enfield

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India are still not ready for the mid-size motorcycle market. The company’s top executive at a recent media interview confirmed the same. The Japanese automaker, however, intends to increase its presence in the Indian mid-size motorcycle segment but is waiting for the right time.

Currently, Honda has the CBR250R, CBR650F, Africa Twin, CB1000R, CBR1000RR and the GoldWing in its big bikes portfolio. While the Africa Twin, CB1000R, CBR1000RR and the GoldWing fall in the premium bikes range, it is only the CBR250R and the CBR650F that are present in the mid-size motorcycle space. Unfortunately, the CBR250R has disappointed Indian folks for various reasons. One is its age (we have been seeing the same motorcycle since its launch) and second is that the bike no more fascinates the enthusiast as the 250cc market has moved on and given way to the 300cc segment.

The mid-size motorcycle segment is currently dominated by Royal Enfield which has the lion’s share in the segment followed by KTM. The Bullet maker will further strengthen its position in the mid-size motorcycle space with the launch of the Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650. TVS recently joined the bandwagon with its Apache RR 310 and by this year end, we will also see BMW’s G310R and the G310 GS on Indian roads. Mahindra plans to reintroduce Jawa bikes by this year end or by early 2019. So, almost every 2-wheeler maker is making efforts to get into the middle-weight bikes segment and grab a significant market share. We hope that Honda won’t be too late to the party.

There were speculations that the Activa maker will launch the Rebel in India to rival the Royal Enfield Classic bikes but the company has remained tight-lipped about the launch of not only the Rebel but also of any mid-size motorcycle for that matter. Clearly then, the company is focused on the scooter and commuter motorcycle range.

Honda Mid-Size Motorcycles

– Honda intends to increase its presence in the mid-size motorcycle segment
– Company is still waiting for the right time to enter the segment
– As of now, only the CBR250R and the CBR650F are offered
– The automaker is focused on scooters and commuter motorcycles currently

2018 Honda CBR250R Side
In Honda’s India portfolio, there is a huge void between the asking price of CBR250R and CBR650F
